The Nightspot program, which completed a year-long pilot in June, has been a real labour of love for Bridget Coyne.
The Logan-based Program Coordinator has been working on establishing this innovative short-term accommodation project for almost five years.
“I loved the fact that Mission Australia saw the project for what it was and knew it would work,” she said. “They really are interested in the bigger picture.”
Nightspot relies on volunteer drivers and families who are trained to host young people at risk of homelessness for up to seven nights. The only service providing emergency accommodation for young people in the region, it ensures people aged 16 to 21 have a chance to work through issues within their safety of their own community.
Volunteers undergo extensive training that is tailored to each family.
“One of the reasons it took a while to set up was that every risk assessment had to be perfect. Everyone involved understands that we have to protect our kids,” said Bridget. “Our host families are like our diamonds.”
Most of the young Nightspot clients are referred to the service by youth support workers, employment services and schools.
“Amazingly, despite the turmoil in their lives, they’re still going to school,” said Bridget. “They’re jumping over 10-feet high hurdles to get there.”
While Nightspot doesn’t provide mediation and counselling, Bridget and her part-time colleague, Lucy Rangi, facilitate this support.
“The idea is to give teenagers time out, to surround them with everything they need to keep going – like pyjamas and toiletries – while we surround them with services.
“We try to catch them when things are starting to go wrong. We are planting a seed in these young people that we hope will blossom. Just to have someone show they’re interested makes a huge difference – I’ve seen it more than once even after a night’. There’s a sense of possibility the next day.”
Bridget recently teamed up with Bridges Reconnect's Allan Cooper to form the Youth Homelessness and Early Intervention Working Group. This collaborative group is designed to prevent youth in the Logan area from becoming homeless.
"Traditionally there is very little in terms of intervention (in Logan)," she told The Reporter newspaper this week. "Instead of seeing it at the crisis end (when they are homeless), there's a potential to intervene at a much earlier stage. These kids on the street can be the kid next door, they're a very misunderstood group of kids."
She added that while homeless youth may not be immediately visible in Logan, this was because many choose to couch surf or catch a train into central Brisbane to sleep rough.

After eight long draining years, I have to wonder if our government even understands what it is to end a war anymore.The end of a war, to most people, means all the troops come home, out of harm’s way.It means we stop killing people and getting killed.It means we stop sending troops and armed personnel over and draining our treasury for military operations in that foreign land.But much like the infamous “mission accomplished” moment of the last administration, this “end” of the war also means none of those things.
50,000 US troops remain in Iraq, and they are still receiving combat pay.One soldier was killed in Basra just last Sunday, after the supposed end of combat operations, and the same day 5,000 men and women of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood were deployed to Iraq.Their mission will be anything but desk duty.Among other things they will accompany the Iraqi military on dangerous patrols, continue to be involved in the hunt for terrorists, and provide air support for the Iraqi military.They should be receiving combat pay, because they will be serving a combat role!
Of course the number of private contractors - who perform many of the same roles as troops, but for a lot more money - is expected to double.So this is a funny way of ending combat operations in Iraq.We are still meddling in their affairs and we are still putting our men and women in danger, and we are still spending money we don’t have.This looks more like an escalation than a draw-down to me!
The ongoing war in Iraq takes place against a backdrop of economic crisis at home, as fresh numbers indicate that our economic situation is as bad as ever, and getting worse!Our foreign policy is based on an illusion: that we are actually paying for it. What we are doing is borrowing and printing the money to maintain our presence overseas. Americans are seeing the cost of this irresponsible approach as our economic decline continues. Unemployed Americans have been questioning a policy that ships hundreds of billions of dollars overseas while their own communities crumble and their frustration is growing.An end to this type of foreign policy is way overdue.
A return to the traditional American foreign policy of active private engagement and non-interventionism is the only alternative that can restore our moral and fiscal health.
From time to time we receive donations of material of use to our collection from other librarians around Sydney, and just received from a colleague at Waverley is this souvenir programme of the inaugural Australian National Games, held in 1928. The programme is of double interest to us because, firstly, it was printed by the local printer, the Manly Daily, and secondly, because the opening ceremony and the bulk of the events were held at Manly. The athletic programme was held at Manly Oval on 7th January 1928, and the swimming and diving at Manly Baths on January 11th and 14th. The cycling component of the Games was held at Sydney Sports Ground, and the Boxing and Wrestling were held at Sydney Stadium. The programme lists all the competing athletes. The Australian National Games were intended to be held every four years, preceding the Olympiad later that year, acting as an Olympic selection event, and the Honorary Directors were James Taylor, Chairman of the Australian Olympic Federation, James Eve, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Australian Olympic Federation, and Les Duff, the Secretary of the NSW Olympic Council. Manly was a natural choice for the swimming events, and argued a strong case for the athletic events, based on the gold medal-winning performance of Nick Winter in 1924 in the triple jump. A photo in the programme shows Manly’s trio of Olympic champions, Boy Charlton, Dick Eve and Nick Winter, posing together.
This view of Little Manly and the Eastern Hill dates from, we think, circa 1920. It was taken from no 63 Stuart Street. Little Manly boatshed, built in 1916, is still in new-looking condition. Bruce Avenue has not yet been formed on the Eastern Hill, following the subdivision of the Manly Point Estate in 1928. It's easy to picture Manly's little penguins finding burrows along the rocky foreshore at this date. The Little Manly Wharf was controlled by the Port Jackson Steam Ship Company, but was only intermittently used, eventually being demolished and the land subdivided. Not many of the grand houses on the Eastern Hill survive, but one which is still in situ is Elim, at 44 Addison Road, with its distinctive central chimney.

Serves 6 - 8 6 eggs 250g caster sugar 750mls double cream 250g pistachios chopped roughly 1 packet persian Fairy Floss, to finish Coulis - - - or sauce 2 punnets of fresh raspberries ( frozen can be used if unavailable) 1/2 cup of caster sugar juice of a lemon
Method: In a heatproof bowl set over a bowl of barely simmering water, whisk the eggs with the sugar until thick. Remove from the heat and continue whisking until completely cool. Line a 7cm deep rectangular loaf tin with cling wrap. Whip the cream until stiff and then fold in the egg mixture and the pistachios. Pour into the lined tin and level with a spatula. Cover with cling wrap and store in the freezer overnight. To make the sauce, puree the raspberries, sugar nad lemon juice in a blender - remove seeds through a sieve. To serve, spoon the raspberry sauce onto the plates. Carefully turn out the semi freddo onto a board, remve the cling wrap, slice into 3.5cm slices then place on each plate, in the middle of the sauce. Top with a little fairly floss and serve immediately.

There were several speedboats plying the waters of Manly Cove in the 1950s and 60s. Names such as Let's Go, Let's Go Too, Kalowa and Hi Ho are still well remembered. Kookaburra, one of the Manly speedboats from the 1930s, is now in the Australian Heritage Fleet at the Australian Maritime Museum. Does anyone recognise which school the girls are from?

Myth #1: King wanted only equal rights, not special privileges and would have opposed affirmative action, quotas, reparations, and the other policies pursued by today’s civil rights leadership.
This is probably the most repeated myth about King. Writing on National Review Online, There Heritage Foundation’s Matthew Spalding wrote a piece entitled "Martin Luther King’s Conservative Mind," where he wrote, "An agenda that advocates quotas, counting by race and set-asides takes us away from King's vision."
The problem with this view is that King openly advocated quotas and racial set-asides. He wrote that the "Negro today is not struggling for some abstract, vague rights, but for concrete improvement in his way of life." When equal opportunity laws failed to achieve this, King looked for other ways. In his book Where Do We Go From Here, he suggested that "A society that has done something special against the Negro for hundreds of years must now do something special for him, to equip him to compete on a just and equal basis." To do this he expressed support for quotas. In a 1968 Playboy interview, he said, "If a city has a 30% Negro population, then it is logical to assume that Negroes should have at least 30% of the jobs in any particular company, and jobs in all categories rather than only in menial areas." King was more than just talk in this regard. Working through his Operation Breadbasket, King threatened boycotts of businesses that did not hire blacks in proportion to their population.
King was even an early proponent of reparations. In his 1964 book, Why We Can’t Wait, he wrote,
No amount of gold could provide an adequate compensation for the exploitation and humiliation of the Negro in America down through the centuries…Yet a price can be placed on unpaid wages. The ancient common law has always provided a remedy for the appropriation of a the labor of one human being by another. This law should be made to apply for American Negroes. The payment should be in the form of a massive program by the government of special, compensatory measures which could be regarded as a settlement in accordance with the accepted practice of common law.
Predicting that critics would note that many whites were equally disadvantaged, King claimed that his program, which he called the "Bill of Rights for the Disadvantaged" would help poor whites as well. This is because once the blacks received reparations, the poor whites would realize that their real enemy was rich whites.
************ A truly legitimate civil rights movement would see to it that the blacks return to Africa (where they belong) and where they can finally assume responsibility for themselves like a mature people. Instead they stay put here in the United States, the land of their real or imagined grievances, and continue to complain and agitate to shake down white America. Any irresponsible talk of reparations must be immediately rebuked by presenting the facts that once the United States subtracted what white America has foolishly given to black America they would owe us!
As Patrick Buchanan has written in "A brief for Whitey" - "Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream."

The University of NSW's Centre for Social Impact recently featured Mission Australia's social enterprise restaurant, Charcoal Lane, on their 'Social Business' program on Sky Business.
'Social Business' discusses the latest news in not-for-profit activity, corporate responsibility, philanthropy and volunteering. It focuses on key issues around social entrepreneurship, public and social innovation and the emergence of new social businesses.
Charcoal Lane is a restaurant in Fitzroy, Melbourne, which serves high-quality modern and native Australian cuisine. Charcoal Lane is a social enterprise launched in 2006 and is supported by Mission Australia. It aims to give disadvantaged youth the opportunity to train in hospitality and pursue careers in the industry.
Shane*, who had been diagnosed with ADHD, had little interest in school. By the age of 14, he had disengaged from mainstream education and was getting himself in trouble with the police.
He first heard about the innovative U-Turn automotive training course from a local police officer. U-Turn is a diversionary program for young people who have been involved in, or who are at risk of becoming involved in, motor vehicle theft.
The core component of the program is a structured 10-week automotive training course in car maintenance and body work, delivered in a workshop environment.
Earlier this year, Shane joined U-Turn for the last five weeks of Course 25. The teenager did so well in that time that he ended up winning the Most Outstanding Graduate Award. This award is sponsored by Hazell Brothers, a large Tasmanian construction firm.
Shane has since managed to secure permanent employment with Hazell Brothers. However, he still attends U-Turn three afternoons a week to improve his literacy and numeracy skills.
As his confidence grows, he is increasingly in a better position to manage the effects of ADHD and connect with the community.
This young man is continuing to do well and is a great example of how giving rewards for work well done and opportunities can break negative cycles.

In late 1919, police arrested Joseph Alfred Schmidt, aged 28. He was found in a well-hidden cave at Seaforth, near the Spit, so covered with vines and creepers that it was almost impossible to discern even when very close by. The cave had been fitted out as a dwelling, including a bed, and Schmidt’s wife was also found on the premises, disguised in man’s clothing. In the cave were found apparatus and chemicals used in photography, zinc plates and a number of negatives, one of which was of a £1 Commonwealth note. There was also printing ink in 3 colours, and 2000 pieces of linen paper cut to the size of a bank note. “It was concluded that the accused was engaged in counterfeiting”. Two Winchester rifles were also found. Schmidt, who also went by the name Fritz Yackles, pretended at his trial to have no English, but this was not believed.[1] Schmidt hit the headlines again in 1921. Mr Brimbecomb, the owner of a well-known dairy at Balgowlah, woke to find a man standing over him, pressing a cloth to his face which smelt strongly of chloroform. Brimbecomb, dazed, fought off the intruder, who fled, leaving behind a knife and a pry bar. The safe in the bedroom, however, was undamaged. The assailant was discovered hiding in a cave in the vicinity, and was captured by the police, but managed to escape into the bush, and evaded re-capture for several weeks. Again, he seems to have been living in an elaborately fitted-out cave at North Harbour.[2] It was Schmidt, who was also wanted on charges of motor car theft, stealing and receiving. He was sentenced to hard labour at Bathurst jail.[3] Schmidt’s wife Daisy sued for divorce, and obtained a decree nisi in 1925. The couple had originally married at Manly in 1919.[4] While at Bathurst Schmidt attempted to escape, and on his release, he soon re-offended. This time, he was charged with breaking and entry, and receiving. He had committed multiple thefts in the Manly area. Judge Scholes on sentencing stated: “You are the renowned Smith, who had an apparatus at Manly for the purpose of printing Commonwealth notes and whom the police chased all over the country. You are a clever man but you are a confirmed criminal. You are sentenced to four years’ penal servitude and I declare you an habitual criminal.” Earlier offences for horse and cattle stealing at Newcastle and malicious damage at Goulburn were disclosed, as well as firearms offences.[5] On 14 November 1930, Schmidt and another prisoner escaped from police custody by removing a plank from the floor of the police van in which they were being transported between Burwood Police Station and the Central Police Court, and dropping though onto the road. Passers-by on Parramatta Road watched them melt into the crowd.[6] He was recaptured on 1 December 1930. On the outbreak of WWII, Schmidt was interned as an alien with a long police record. His internment records give his nationality as Dutch[?], born in 1895, arriving in Australia in 1911. On 10 February 1940, possibly with the help of confederates who had put the local sub-station out of action a month earlier, he escaped from Liverpool internment camp, by hiding under a sanitary wagon. The bloodhound “Disraeli” and two Alsatians brought in to track him were unable to find a scent! This was the first escape from any internment camp in Australia in WWII, and sparked Australia’s biggest man-hunt for many years. He was recaptured at the Balmain lodgings of his second wife (one Marie Smith) and child, after a dramatic scuffle and another attempted escape across the rooftops. He was granted bail, despite a forged banknote being found in his possession, and he and his wife were later acquitted on a charge of having a forged banknote.[7] Scmidt was returned to internment, and after two unsuccessful appearances before the Appeals Tribunal, he was released from internment on 11 September 1944. What happened to him thereafter is unknown.

Mission Australia and The Fury will run a range of programs that will engage youth in northern Queensland and the Northern Territory, including courses in sports administration and coaching that students will come out of with qualifications and work experience.”
We will also run joint programs through the Queensland and Northern Territory men’s and women’s correctional systems to better prepare Aboriginal people for life after release.
“There are a lot of exciting things in the pipeline,” said Prins. "For example, we’re looking at working together to run after-school ‘homework clubs’ in Townsville, Cairns and Darwin initially, with hopes to extend it westwards.”
Prins is confident that many fundraising opportunities will arise from the partnership over the next three years, such as the Fury playing a Mission Australia “team of choice” made up of sponsored players.

Not everyone’s a winner during a booming property market, as Adelaide mum Jane* knows only too well.
Winter 2009 was a time of precarious living for Jane and her three children, with the cold nights spent sleeping in motels and even the family car.
“We had to leave the home we were in as it was being renovated. Once the work was done the rent shot up and I couldn’t afford it,” Jane said.
“I put in over 100 applications but couldn’t find a place. I’m a full-time carer and if you’re not working it’s harder to get a lease.
“When you rent, all it takes is for something to go wrong – even something to happen to the owner – and you could be homeless.”
After months of uncertainty, Jane was referred to The Parks, Mission Australia’s Family Accommodation and Support Service in Adelaide’s western suburbs.
Family Support Worker Helen Delaney moved quickly to help Jane prioritise her bill payments, organised for her to receive financial counselling and assisted the family into secure housing.
“Helen worked solidly to move me into a Mission Australia house,” Jane said. “She also did a lot of ringing around about bills, especially my storage bills, which kept the pressure off. If you’ve got an advocate from Mission Australia, things just go smoother, way smoother.”
Within two weeks Mission Australia moved Jane and her family into a private rental in a family-friendly suburb.
“My life is getting way better,” she said. “I have a roof over my head and it’s long-term and I’ve paid all my storage bills.
“I’m so glad we’re stable and not going anywhere and my older daughters can concentrate on school - being 13 and 11 and not having a home is very scary. And for my little one, just having a comfort zone is important. She’s now much more fun to be around.”
Jane particularly appreciated Mission Australia staff staying in contact to ensure her life was well and truly back on track.
“They kept in touch to make sure I was okay,” she said. “They don’t just get you on your feet and leave you; they make sure you’re properly solid.”
The positive outcome, according to Helen, was very much due to Jane’s determination to do the best for her family: “Her turnover from being homeless to settling into private rental took weeks. It showed just how dedicated she was to getting her life back on track.
“She is a great example of someone who just needed that extra bit of support. As we always say, ‘There but for the grace of God go I… You just don’t know where your life is going to lead you.”

THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE IN AFGHANISTAN Wednesday, August 11, 2010 – by Dr. Ron Paul
Last week the National Bureau of Economic Research published a report on the effect of civilian casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq that confirmed what critics of our foreign policy have been saying for years: the killing of civilians, although unintentional, angers other civilians and prompts them to seek revenge. This should be self-evident.
The Central Intelligence Agency has long acknowledged and analyzed the concept of blowback in our foreign policy. It still amazes me that so many think that attacks against our soldiers occupying hostile foreign lands are motivated by hatred toward our system of government at home or by the religion of the attackers. In fact, most of the anger towards us is rooted in reactions towards seeing their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and other loved ones being killed by a foreign army. No matter our intentions, the violence of our militarism in foreign lands causes those residents to seek revenge if innocents are killed. One does not have to be Muslim to react this way, just human.
Our battle in Afghanistan resembles the battle against the many-headed Hydra monster in Greek mythology. According to Former General Stanley McChrystal’s so-called insurgent math, for every insurgent killed, 10 more insurgents are created by the collateral damage to civilians. Every coalition attack leads to 6 retaliatory attacks against our troops within the following six weeks, according to the NBER report. These retaliatory attacks must then be acted on by our troops, leading to still more attacks, and so it goes. Violence begets more violence. Eventually more and more Afghanis will view American troops with hostility and seek revenge for the death of a loved one. Meanwhile, we are bleeding ourselves dry, militarily and economically.
Some say if we leave, the Taliban will be strengthened. However, those who make that claim ignore the numerous ways our interventionist foreign policy has strengthened groups like the Taliban over the years. I’ve already pointed out how we serve as excellent recruiters for them by killing civilians. Last week I pointed out how our foreign aid, to Pakistan specifically, makes it into Taliban coffers. And of course we provided the Taliban with aid and resources in the 1980s, when they were our strategic allies against the Soviet Union. For example – our CIA supplied them with Stinger missiles to use against the Soviets, which are strikingly similar to the ones now allegedly used against us on the same battlefield, according to those Wikileaks documents. As usual, our friends have a funny way of turning against us. Manuel Noriega and Saddam Hussein are also prime examples. Yet Congress never seems to acknowledge the blowback that results from our interventionism of the past.
Our war against the Taliban is going about as well as our war on drugs, or our war on poverty, or any of our government’s wars – they all tend to create more of the thing they purport to eradicate, thereby dodging any excuse to draw down and come to an end. It is hard to imagine ever “winning” anything this way.
We have done enough damage in Afghanistan, both to the Afghan people, and to ourselves. It’s time to re-evaluate the situation. It’s time to come home
Study cites Constitutional framers, Supreme Court rulings
President Obama may not fit the Constitutional eligibility requirement that stipulates only "natural born" citizens can serve as U.S. president, concluded the authors of a recently released book.
An investigation by the authors found that according to correspondence from the original framers of the Constitution as well as multiple Supreme Court rulings and the legal writings that helped establish the principals of the Constitution, Obama is not eligible to serve as president since his father was not a U.S. citizen.
With nearly 900 endnotes, the book, "The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's ties to communists, socialists and other anti-American extremists," was written by WND senior reporter Aaron Klein and r esearcher Brenda J. Elliott.

The authors concluded Obama may not be eligible regardless of his place of birth. The book recommends further legislative and judicial debate.
"It is undisputed that Obama’s father was not a U.S. citizen," wrote Klein, "a fact that should have led to congressional debate about whether Obama is eligible under the United States Constitution to serve as president."
Obama was born on August 4, 1961, to Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama, Sr. Dunham was an American of predominantly English descent from Wichita, Kansas, and was 18 years old at the time of Obama’s birth. Obama Sr. was a member of the Luo tribe from Nyang’oma Kogelo, Nyanza Province, Kenya, which at the time was still a British colony.
Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution stipulates presidential eligibility, requiring the nation’s elected chief to be a “natural born citizen.”
That clause states: “No person except a natural born citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”
The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitut ion specifically defines "citizen” but not "natural born citizen"
A "citizen" is defined as: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are Citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
However, no definition of “natural born citizen” -- which is only used in the presidential requirement clause --was provided anywhere in the Constitution, and to this day the precise meaning of the term is still being debated.
There are no records of any definitive discussion on the matter during the Constitutional Convention. That—coupled with the absence of definitive Supreme Court rulings and a wide array of opinions th roughout the centuries—has only further confused the question of what “natural born” actually means.
Still, the authors found that according to the framers of the Constitution as well as Supreme Court rulings, Obama does not fit the eligibility requirements.
'Natural born' defined
The first U.S. Congress passed a law that began to define “natural born.” The Naturalization Act of 1790 rejected the condition of being born on U.S. soil, and referred only to parentage: “The children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States,” the Act states, “shall be considered as natural born citizens: Provided, t hat the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States.
Five years later, however, Congress repealed the Act.
"Still, it was clear that the intention of the Constitution’s 'natural born citizen' qualification was to ensure the country would not be led by an individual with dual loyalties," wrote Klein in "The Manchurian President."
On July 25, 1787, Founding Father John Jay, one of the three authors of the Federalist Papers, wrote to George Washington, who was at the time presiding over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.
Jay discussed the dual loyalty concern, writing: “Permit me to hint, whether it would be wise and seasonable to provide a strong check to the admission of Foreigners into the administration of our national Government; and to declare expressly that the Commander in Chief of the American army shall not be given to nor devolve on, any but a natural born Citizen.”
Jay, however, also did not define “natural born.”
'According to John Bingham, guiding tome, Obama not eligible'
Representative John Bingham of Ohio, a principal framer of the Fourteenth Amendment, offered some definition for presidential qualifi cations in a discussion in the House on March 9, 1866: “[I] find no fault with the introductory clause [S 61 Bill], which is simply declaratory of what is written in the Constitution, that every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen.”
"So according to Bingham, as well, Obama would not be eligible to serve as president," wrote Klein.
In trying to understand what the Founding Fathers meant by “natural born,” the authors wrote in "The Manchurian President" that some have turned to prominent legal tomes of the day.
The Law of Nations, a 1758 work by Swiss legal philosopher Emmerich de Vattel, was read by many of the American Founders and informed their understanding of the principles of law, which became established in the Constitution of 1787.
De Vattel writes in Book 1, Chapter 19, of his treatise, “The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens. As the society cannot exist and perpetuate itself otherwise than by the children of the citizens, those children naturally follow the condition of their fathers, and succeed to all their rights. . . . In order to be of the country, it is necessary that a person be born of a father who is a citizen; for, if he is born there of a foreigner, it will be only the place of his birth, and not his country.
"So by de Vattel’s standards, Obama arguably would not be eligible to serve as president," wrote Klein.
Obama not eligible according to some Supreme Court decisions
Numerous Supreme Court decisions have yielded conflicting views of citizenship and what it means to be a “natural born citizen.” In Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), for example, the Court ruled that citizenship is acquired by place of birth, not through blood or lineage.
But much of that case’s decision—which had notoriously excluded slaves, and their descendants, from possessing Constitutional righ ts—was overturned in 1868.
Another case, Minor v. Happersett, in 1874, mentions the “natural born” issue:
States that case: "At common law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country, of parents [plural] who were its citizens [plural], became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners. Some authorities go further, and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction, without reference to the citizenship of their parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first. For the purposes of this case, it is not necessary to solve these doubts. It is sufficien t, for everything we have now to consider, that all children, born of citizen parents within the jurisdiction, are themselves citizens.
Writes Klein: "According to this definition, and scores of other Supreme Court rulings, Obama may not be eligible to serve as president."
The authors conclude that a "reading of readily available legal resources regarding the definition of 'natural born citizen” clearly indicates a series of legitimate questions about Barack Obama’s eligibility for the presidency, given that Obama’s father was not an American citizen."
"The resources warrant further debate," wrote Klein.
"The Manchurian President" points out despite these glaring eligibility issues, the legislative and judicial bodies of the U.S. government have held no formal discussions, nor did they conduct a single formal investigation into whether Obama is eligible to serve under the Fourteenth Amendment.
Congress did, however, question the "natural born" qualifications of Obama's 2008 presidential opponent, Senator John McCain.
The scion of distinguished U.S. naval officers, McCain was born to two American parents in the Panama Canal Zone. On April 30, 2008, the U.S. Senate sought to answer the question by passing a nonbinding resolution, which states, "Whereas John Sidney McCain, III, was born to American citizens on an American military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936: Now, therefore, be it resolved, that John Sidney McCain, III, is a 'natural born citizen' under Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States."
Obama called 'Manchurian President'
Meanwhile, "The Manchurian President" bills itself as the most exhaustive investigation ever performed into Obama and his radical background and ties.
Among the many finds of "The Manchurian President":
A coalition of extremists, including a founder of William Ayers' Weather Underground domestic-terrorist organization, helped craft Obama's "stimulus" bill;
Obama's health-care policy, masked by moderate populists rhetoric, was pushed along and partially crafted by extremists, some of whom reveal in their own words that their principal aim is to achieve corporate socialist goals and a vast increase in government powers;
Extremists are among Obama's "czars" and other top advisers. New information links top advisers Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett to communist activists. The book uncovers correspondence in which a communist confesses to mentoring and educating Axelrod and helping the top Obama aide to secure his first job. Obama then later worked with the same communist, the book finds;
Copious research reveals more about Obama's deep ties to Ayers, uncovering for the first time where and how Obama first met Ayers - and it is much earlier than previously believed;
Important aspects of Obama's carefully covered-up college years, with new details of his student career at Occidental College and later at Columbia University, are revealed;
Obama's early years, including his previously overlooked early childhood ties to a radical, far-left church, are documented;
Obama's association with the Nation of Islam, Black Liberation Theology and black political extremists are also revealed, with extensive new information on the subjects;
Obama's deep ties to ACORN, which are much more extensive than previously documented elsewhere, are covered. The book also crucially descries how a socialist-led, ACORN-affiliated union helped facilitate Obama's political career and now exerts major influence in the White House.
