Why do we dedicate a day to the celebration of women?

Mission Australia’s Tasmanian State Chaplain, Lauren McGrow, reflects on the importance of International Women’s Day:

If females are to enjoy their full human rights and core freedoms, then a day set aside to recognise their actions and struggles, their power and passions, their beauty and humanity, their equality and truth, is vital.

While we celebrate, we can also continue to remember those who are oppressed, denied education and basic health care or suffering violence, because of gender.

The theme this year in Australia is ‘Unite to End Violence Against Women’. As such, International Women’s Day provides us with an opportunity to get together, to talk honestly and mobilise for meaningful change in our homes, families, cultures, churches and political structures.

This is something that is familiar to those of us at Mission Australia. We come together to act for meaningful change in our society. It is our heritage and also our future within this organisation.

As we join in celebrating International Women’s Day, can we be inspired again to harness our own passions and courage for justice, remembering those who have gone before, acknowledging what we have achieved and committing to go on into a new day of promise?

Happy International Women’s Day everyone!
