Media Release: PM for a day? What would you do to tackle poverty?
Mission Australia is encouraging Australians of all ages to say what they would do to alleviate poverty if they were Prime Minister for a day to help mark Anti-Poverty Week (11-17 October).
The best response – delivered in the form of a short video no longer than 60 seconds – will be judged by Mission Australia’s CEO, Toby Hall, with the winner being flown to Canberra to meet the Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion, Senator Ursula Stephens, to discuss their idea.
According to Toby Hall, the idea behind the competition was to organise a fun activity that also raised awareness around the issue of poverty and engaged people in what they could do to help.
“Most Australians are pretty lucky but there is a significant minority who are stuck in poverty, cut off from life’s essentials, and who need our help,” said Mr Hall.
“From our own research we know that around one in seven people who turn to welfare organisations lack a substantial meal at least once a day – that’s a shocking situation in modern Australia.
“As well as the most basic need for food, 30 per cent of our clients lack a decent and secure home; 25 per cent are unable to buy prescribed medicines; 46 per cent don't have access to dental services; and 11 per cent don't have a separate bed for each of their kids.
“People living in poverty are unable to participate in the activities that most of us take for granted. They are often faced with difficult choices – such as skipping a meal to pay for a child’s text book.
“Getting involved in the ‘PM for a day’ competition is easy. All participants need to do is make a short video of themselves – no longer than 60 seconds – and tell us what they would do to address poverty if they were Prime Minister for 24 hours.
“It doesn’t have to filmed on a video camera – you can use your mobile phone – just as long as it’s less than 60 seconds and sticks to the subject.
“Simply visit www.missionaustralia.com.au/apw for entry details. To post your video participants will need to register with youtube.com.
“There's still two weeks left to get your entry in. We have to receive videos by midnight on Friday, 16 October with the winner being announced online on Friday, 30 October.
“We’ll fly the winner to Canberra to meet the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion, Senator Ursula Stephens, to discuss their ideas and the issues surrounding poverty,” said Toby.

The Real Reasons Behind Fed Secrecy
Congressman Paul's Texas Straight Talk
“Last week I was very pleased that the Financial Services Committee held a hearing on the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, HR 1207. The bill has 295 cosponsors and there is also strong support for the companion bill in the Senate. This hearing was a major step forward in getting the bill passed.
I was pleased that the hearing was well-attended, especially considering that it was held on a Friday at nine o’clock in the morning! I have been talking about the immense, unchecked power of the Federal Reserve for many years, while the attention of Congress was always on other things. It was gratifying to see my colleagues asking probing questions and demonstrating genuine concern about this important issue as well…”

Mission Australia's Charcoal Lane restaurant now taking orders
It’s not often that you associate an up-and-coming restaurant with a community service organisation, but that’s exactly what makes Mission Australia’s Charcoal Lane restaurant so distinctive.
You can sense that Charcoal Lane is special as soon as you walk through its door. Created within a beautiful heritage building in Melbourne’s up-and-coming Fitzroy district, the restaurant features delicately hand painted ceiling panels.
The menu is equally unique – a fusion of modern Australian food and native flavours.
Charcoal Lane was made possible through a partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS). It provides the opportunity for Aboriginal and disadvantaged young people to transform their lives through traineeships and apprenticeships within the restaurant.
The heritage building in which Charcoal Lane is located originally housed VAHS from 1973 until 1992. VAHS is not just a health service. As well as offering access to a wide range of services and programs it has always been a place where people gather, share stories and pass on wisdom.
Many of the people who visited VAHS also frequently congregated at the back of a briquette factory in Fitzroy/Collingwood colloquially known as ‘Charcoal Lane’ – the inspiration for our restaurant’s name.
People came to Charcoal Lane to enjoy each other’s company, to share a drink and a story away from the public eye. One of those people, Archie Roach, recently released a song of the same name in remembrance of the people and times of the Lane.
The new Charcoal Lane has a wonderfully appetising menu, which showcases the restaurant’s native influences.
We hope that Charcoal Lane will continue to be a meeting place for the community in the future and encourage you to experience the food first-hand.

Mission Australia Early Learning opens it's doors in Shell Cove
Families enjoyed a BBQ and children’s entertainment including storytelling, face-painting and pony rides.
New enrolments taken on the day have gone into the draw for a free skydive by Sky Dive on the Beach (Wollongong) in October.
Mission Australia’s spokesperson, Ben Williams, said Mission Australia had a long and successful history caring for children and providing not-for-profit early learning.
“We plan on making a significant contribution to early learning in the Wollongong and Shellharbour areas having taken on the former ABC Learning centre in Shell Cove,” said Ben.
“Currently we assist hundreds of children and their families through early childhood support services. We’ll be drawing on all of that experience and knowledge at Shell Cove."
As a not-for-profit provider, Mission Australia's early learning services have a very different structure and approach to the previous owner, ABC Learning, noted Mr Williams.
“Because we’re a not-for-profit organisation, any surpluses generated from Mission Australia’s centres are returned straight back into the services to deliver better outcomes for children.
“The bottom line for us is we’re here to provide high quality early learning and care and to make a long-term difference. We run our services for the benefit of children, families and the community – not shareholders.
“The local Shell Cove community has really embraced the notion of a not-for-profit like Mission Australia taking over the management of this centre and we’re looking to repay their faith by providing a fantastic service to support children and families,” said Ben.
Tiger Putt Putt, Country Kitchen Café, Photo House Kiama, Play Days, Tangs Restaurant Shellharbour Village, Bakers Delight Wollongong, Play Maze and Donut King all made prize donations for the open day.
Advantage U Tennis Coaching also conducted tennis demonstrations for the children.

Youth think outside of the box with Artstart 2009
Artstart 2009 is managed through local councils and aims to encourage youth aged 12 to 24 to design and direct creative projects with the assistance of community service organisations like Mission Australia.
The students involved used Mission Australia's donation bins as the 'canvas' for their designs. Kiama Municipal Council's senior youth worker, Andrew Chatfield, said as part of the creative process, teachers at each school integrated the project into visual arts studies, enabling them to completely manage the project's design.
The students have redecorated the bins following the theme of Mission Australia's Big Heart Stores - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - and have come up with some fantastic murals and designs to emphasise the theme.
"The project gave the young people taking part an opportunity to express their creativity, build self esteem, and develop leadership and teamwork skills, while being involved in a worthwhile cause to promote and educate people of all ages on the importance on recycling, reducing, reusing," Mr Chatfield said.
We hope that the Kiama community will support the project by helping us fill the six bins before they are collected by Mission Australia and distributed throughout the region.
The students' artworks/donations bins are on display in their usual locations for anyone donating unwanted clothing, shoes and blankets to Mission Australia. Check out our bin locations at his link

Mission Australia marks 150 years with a fundraising sleepout in Dubbo tonight
Those sleeping out will seek sponsorship for their efforts with the person raising the most money receiving a prize.
Highlight of the event will be a ‘cardboard box house making competition’ where representatives from Mission Australia services and other community agencies in Dubbo will construct their own shelter for the evening.
A BBQ will be held on the night – and for breakfast the next morning – to help raise money from passers-by for Mission Australia’s local services.
Mission Australia provides a range of programs in and around Dubbo including:
- Dubbo Leadership and Cultural Development Program – helps keep Aboriginal students aged between 9 (Year 5) and 17 (Year 11) years at school and increases their cultural awareness, identity and understanding.
- Housing and Accommodation Support Initiative (HASI) – helps people with mental illness receive care at home and keeps them in touch with their community. It also reduces their length of time spent in hospital and helps them avoid homelessness.
- Brighter Futures – provides support to vulnerable families and children as early as possible and builds their resilience to prevent problems developing in the future.
- Young Offenders Post-Release Support – supports young people after their release from the juvenile justice system. Provides positive alternatives to offending and helps with practical things such as anger management and basic living skills.
- Resource and Recovery – aimed at improving outcomes for people with mental illness by supporting them in developing personal goals with a focus on training and employment.
Want to raise money for Mission Australia?
Run your own fundraiser with Mission Australia's Community Fundraising.Events can include trivia nights, auctions, theme days, guessing competitions, getting sponsored to run, walk or cycle, and many other activities.

Media Release: Mission Australia to host community forum at Rooty Hill RSL today
Around 50 representatives from local community services and agencies will attend the forum and will contribute to developing a strategic plan to provide improved support for children, 0-12, and their families in the Mt Druitt area.
Giving the keynote address at the forum will be Dr Fiona Hilferty from the University of NSW who will be speaking on the impact of poverty on children’s learning.
Communities for Children is a Federal Government program that provides support to vulnerable and at risk children, parents and families.
Mission Australia’s spokesperson, Angela Power, said the aim of the forum is to identify issues and challenges facing families in and around Mt Druitt as well as improve service delivery for children and families.
“This forum will be the first step in the process and we hope to encourage service providers to come along and participate as well as form valuable networks with other providers in the area,” Ms Power said.
“As the facilitating partner for the Mt Druitt Communities for Children program, part of Mission Australia’s role is to identify gaps in service delivery dealing with children and families and assist in identifying ways to fill those gaps and plan for the future.”
Mt Druitt Communities for Children is funded by the Federal Government’s Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Four Corners' Last Chance Motel - A timely reminder of the reality of Homelessness
As expected, the families featured all have their own stories to tell - when it comes to homelessness there is no stereotype: it is a situation arising from system failure rather than human failure.
As one father mentioned: "I've always had this picture in my head of a homeless person... they've got torn dirty clothes, they're not shaven, they're sort of sitting out on the corner looking for a handout… I'm not in that category but I don't have a home for my family and it's really embarrassing."
Homelessness is a symptom that arises from the combination of a low-income, a tight rental market favouring prejudice and a public housing system that has been systematically scaled back over the past decade.
As one mother mentioned in the program, how is she supposed to perform her role as mother while they have their family packed into a single hotel room and living out of boxes? Long-term 'temporary' accommodation is hardly the solution.
While rental properties are pricing low-income earners out of the market, there needs to be adequate public housing to meet the demand - but taxpayer funded 'temporary' accommodation should only ever be just that...temporary.

Not Brighton
So who was the 'Mr Slattery' who pulled off this coup? In fact, he was rather more influential than has previously been thought. Born in Ireland in 1844, Thomas Michael Slattery came to Australia with his family in 1847. He became a lawyer, and at the time of the petition, had risen to be Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court of NSW, no less, at the very heart of the NSW Establishment. He was a crony of the influential Manly businessman and Mayor of Sydney, John Woods, a fellow Irishman. Slattery was a wily operator, and later became a Member of Parliament for Boorowa and Minister of Justice in the 1880s, not to mention a Knight of St Gregory. He would have had the ear of Robertson, the Colonial Secretary, and between them he and Woods would have had no difficulty in persuading him to drop ‘Brighton’ and go with ‘Manly’, or indeed any other name they chose. But after all that, having finagled the name change Mr Slattery soon moved elsewhere. He died at Mosman in 1920.
Media Release: Mission Australia Launches South Australian Early Learning Centres
The centres at Redwood Park, Elizabeth and Osborne are former ABC Learning sites – part of the 29 centres Mission Australia acquired earlier this year and took over in June.
Mission Australia Early Learning Service’s CEO Karen Twitchett says the launch of the sites represented a new beginning for South Australian children and their families.
“Months of planning, co-ordination and consultation with leading developmental and learning experts have ensured these centres are ready to provide the best care and learning services for children and their families,” Ms Twitchett said.
The launch of the Mission Australia Early Learning Services in South Australia will be staged at the Osborne Early Learning Centre at Lot 19, Brookman St, Osborne, from 8.30 am, Tuesday, 22 September.
Children will have their faces painted during the “party” and will engage in activities including “children’s yoga”, a jumping castle and cake cutting. Ms Twitchett will read the children a story between 8.30 am and 10.30 am.
Ms Twitchett said Mission Australia’s Early Learning services would work with families and their communities to provide high quality education and care with an emphasis on supporting children to make a successful transition to school.
“We take a holistic approach to early childhood learning which means we look at all aspects of a child’s life to ensure they can get the different types of care they need,” said Ms Twitchett
“We envisage that in the future our centres will become community hubs where children, their families and other community groups can connect and access a range of services.”
As a not-for-profit provider, Mission Australia Early Learning Services has a very different structure and approach to the previous owner, ABC Learning, noted Ms Twitchett.
“Because we’re a not-for-profit organisation, any surpluses generated from Mission Australia’s centres will be returned straight back into the services to deliver better outcomes for children.
“The bottom line for us is that we’re here to provide high quality early learning and care and to make a long-term difference. We run our services for the benefit of children, families and the community – not shareholders,” said Ms Twitchett.

Trade Wars and Protectionism are not Free Trade
“Two weeks ago, both the administration and the Fed announced with straight faces that the recession was over and the signs of economic recovery were clear. Then last week, the president made a stunning decision that signals the administration’s determination to repeat the mistakes of the Great Depression. Much like the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs that set off a global trade war and effectively doomed us to ten more years of economic misery, Obama’s decision to enact steep tariffs on Chinese imported tires could spark a trade war with the single most important trading partner we have. Not only does China manufacture a whole host of products that end up on American store shelves, they are also still buying our Treasury debt…”

Youth on track to dream career
Only a few months ago, Jamie was a disaffected secondary-school student who hated school – but wasn’t sure how he’d find a path towards a job and a future.
But with the help of Mission Australia case manager Frank Ross, a lifelong passion for BMX that’s extended beyond riding and embraced the design and construction of the sport’s specialised tracks – and some good timing – Jamie is now looking toward a career in track building and maintenance.
Jamie, 17, was one of a group of BMX fans from Adelaide’s southern suburbs who had spent many hours repairing and maintaining the bike track at Pine Road, when he and mate Anthony Collins were approached by the City of Onkaparinga Council to help with safety-related track renovations.
A TAFE student in the Mission Australia “Flexible Learning Options” (FLO) program – managed through the organisation’s Southern Youth Exchange service at Christies Downs – Jamie says the council told him it would supply the enormous amounts of dirt required for the work, if he and Anthony would perform the work.
“It was a case of being in the right place at the right time,” Jamie says. “Anthony and I happened to be there when the council workers came to the track to look at what work needed to be done.
“They could see we’d put a lot of work into the track already, and knew what we were doing.”
After a week’s effort, filling every moment when he’s not studying for his TAFE graphic design certificate, Jamie says about half the work is done.
Jamie is hoping the project will lead to a fulltime job in track construction and maintenance.
Since joining the FLO program, he’s transferred from secondary school to TAFE and has enrolled to earn his bobcat and forklift licences after his 18th birthday in October.
He says “Frank” has helped him “make good decisions” about his future.
“I wasn’t going to school much, and Mission Australia suggested I move to the FLO program and find something I really wanted to study at TAFE,” Jamie says.
“With Frank’s help, I’ve changed from being a kid who really didn’t have a place at school to someone who can see a real future in a job I want to work for – all in a few months.”
Mission Australia provides FLO in partnership with the South Australian Government. It’s an initiative that offers education opportunities for young people who have dropped out of school or are at risk of doing so.
According to Mission Australia’s SA State Director, Jillian Paull, Jamie’s turnaround is a testament to FLO’s success.
“If we’re to stop young people who feel restricted by or excluded from mainstream schooling from dropping out then we need to be flexible,” said Ms Paull.
“We need to start building education around the young person’s needs rather than fitting them into the system.
“That’s exactly what FLO does – it provides accredited schooling outside the traditional classroom in a youth-friendly environment – and the results, like Jamie’s, speak for themselves.
“We’re over the moon at Jamie’s success and glad to see that Mission Australia and FLO have played a part in helping him stay engaged with his education and in a position where he can take advantage of the opportunities before him,” said Ms Paull.

U-Turn graduates donate restored car to victims of car theft
A Moonah family, who’ve had three cars stolen in the past four years, were today handed the keys to a rebuilt `95 Hyundai Excel by six young Tasmanians graduating from Mission Australia’s U-Turn automotive training course.
U-Turn is a ‘best practice’ diversionary program for young people who have been involved in, or who are at risk of becoming involved in, motor vehicle theft. The core component of the program is a structured ten-week automotive training course in car maintenance and body work, delivered in a workshop environment.
Mission Australia’s Community Services Operations Manager Lucy O’Flaherty said the victim, who received the car on behalf of her family, said the car had gone some way in restoring her faith in young people and the community.
“During the 10-week course, the U-Turn participants repaired numerous dents on the RACT donated car, completed an engine service, undertook a full service, a test run and finished off with a complete re-spray,” Ms O’Flaherty said.
“The opportunity for participants to repair a vehicle for presentation to a victim of vehicle theft is one of the most important components of the U-Turn program.”
Graduates were presented with certificates by the Minister for Infrastructure Mr Graeme Sturges MHA and Tasmania Police Commander Steve Bond.
Achievement Awards were also presented at the graduation including the Hazell Bros Most Outstanding Graduate, the RACT Safety Awareness Award, the Encouragement Award for Effort and the Most Improved for Attitude and Enthusiasm.
The U-Turn workshop is located in Moonah with a supported accommodation service available to enable young people from other parts of the State to participate in the program. The program is delivered by Mission Australia, under contract to Tasmania Police, and is funded by the State Government.
In last year’s budget, the State Government announced additional funding for the appointment of two part-time youth workers as dedicated post course support workers. The State Government has also committed ongoing funding for the program until June 2010.
Mission Australia has almost 280 services across every state and territory in Australia and has five offices in Tasmania, located in Burnie, Launceston, Hobart, Moonah and Devonport.

60 seconds of fame for a world without poverty
Speak-up with Mission Australia for a world free of Poverty!
Anti-Poverty Week commences Sunday, October 11 to Friday, October 17.
It is a week when Australians from all walks of life are encouraged to speak up in support of people who go without the essentials of life.
People living in poverty are often faced with difficult choices - such as skipping a meal to pay for a child’s text book. In fact, latest research shows that around one in seven Australians who turn to welfare organisations for help lack a substantial meal at least once a day.
As well as the most basic need for food, 29.6% of clients lack a decent and secure home; 25.3% are unable to buy prescribed medicines; 45.7% don't have access to dental services; and 11.4% don't have a separate bed for each child.
In support of Anti-Poverty Week, Mission Australia is encouraging the Australian public to tell us how you would tackle poverty if you were Prime Minister via a short, 60 second video. Your video will join many others in a video petition as your 'signature' against poverty.
If you are over 18 and would like to participate, visit the Mission Australia website for full details on how to sign-on and speak-up for a country free of poverty!
We also encourage you to coordinate your own Anti-Poverty Week activity. For ideas and details on how to register your activity, or to join an activity in your local community, visit the Anti-Poverty Week website.
Congressman Ron Paul's Texas Straight Talk: More Corporate Welfare
“Last Wednesday the nation was riveted to the President’s speech on healthcare reform before Congress. While the President’s concern for the uninsured is no doubt sincere, his plan amounts to a magnanimous gift to the health insurance industry, despite any implications to the contrary…”

Globalist stooge Obama
Obama resurrects Bush plan to kill sovereignty
Surprise! President Obama is continuing President George W. Bush's effort to advance North American integration with a public-relations makeover calculated to place the program under the radar of public opinion and to deflect concerns about border security and national sovereignty.

Ecumenical Service celebrates 150 years of helping Australians in need
Led by Peter Devenish-Meares, one of Mission Australia's Queensland Chaplains, the Service was attended by Mission Australia's Board of Directors, Executive Leadership Team and CEO Toby Hall.
The service was a great opportunity to celebrate, commemorate and thank those throughout Queensland and Australia, who have supported Mission Australia over the past 150 years.
"Without the services and support of those people we would not have been able to help more than 330,000 people last year, and continue to help those in need", Mr Hall stated.
Clients and staff, both past and present, joined in the celebration to commemorate their own personal experiences with Mission Australia.
The Pathways Choir of Clients and Staff, drawn from Mission Australia's Pathways to Prevention Program, made their singing debut. They performed a song written especially for the service, symbolising their personal achievements through the Pathways Program. A transcript of their song can be found below.
The service gave thanks to the volunteers, donors, supporters and friends, who have helped make Mission Australia what it is today - one of Australia's largest and longest serving community service organisations.

The Pathways Song - Music and lyrics by Sue Swindon and Mission Australia Pathways to Prevention, sung by Mission Australia Pathways ‘Choir of Clients and Staff’, arranged by David McGregor:
This land was ours before all time,
It’s mysteries we knew.
‘Til hist’ry took our way of life,
And it took the children too.
But we dare to walk the road
Of “Sorry” and all that means.
‘Cos we won’t let nobody,
Nobody take our dreams.
They came to serve a prison term;
Were seeking unknown lands.
Came to work the soil.
Diggers fought with their own hands.
They came to find the gold and treasure
Before it was too late.
Now there is the sand and surf,
And ev’ry one’s called “mate”.
We may speak in different tongues
But our voice can be as one
Hope for families strong and free
Being all that we can be
We stand together
We stand as one
In this land of burning sun
We can build a brighter day
We can make a better day
This land has been a refuge
From places torn by war.
Took the road by land and sea
Wanting so much more.
But we live with hidden loss,
With sadness and with pain.
But there is no turning back,
No turning back again.
The islands we once called our home,
But it’s here that we have come.
A future for our young and old
When all is said and done.
But we remember life is hard
For those we’ve left behind.
So ways to stay connected
We will always find.
So when the night is cold and
We feel worry and despair.
We know our friends and neighbours
And Pathways will be there.
Many will still find their home
In this land with much to share,
Seeking safety, to live and love –
A place where others care.
But not without some fear and tears
Will they come to our land?
So we commit to give our hearts
And give a helping hand.

Mission Australia thanks the community for their generosity this winter
During the winter season of 2009, Mission Australia received collections of basics including blankets, grocery items and toiletries to distribute to some of our most marginalised members of society; for these items we owe a resounding and heart-felt THANK YOU!
Something as elementary as seasonal change can pose devastating affects on homeless people's health, especially those that endure rough-sleeping. With many Mission Australia clients surviving without any other support network, these recent donations have been highly sort-after and appreciated.
Below are the very generous organisations involved in this year's Winter Appeal - many thanks to all involved:
- AMP Foundation
- Bayer
- Davis Langdon
- Deutsche Bank
- Hamilton James & Bruce
- Macquarie Bank
- Optus
