One horse-power
Cap and Trade Will Lead to Capital Flight
Cap and Trade Will Lead to Capital Flight
“In my last column, I joked that with public spending out of control and the piling on of the international bailout bill, economic collapse seems to be the goal of Congress. It is getting harder to joke about such a thing however, as the non-partisan General Accounting Office (GAO) has estimated that the administration’s health care plan would actually cost over a trillion dollars. This reality check may have given us a temporary reprieve on this particular disastrous policy, however an equally disastrous energy policy reared its ugly head on Capitol Hill last week.
The Cap and Trade Bill HR 2454 was voted on last Friday. Proponents claim this bill will help the environment, but what it really does is put another nail in the economy’s coffin. The idea is to establish a national level of carbon dioxide emissions, and sell pollution permits to industry as the Catholic Church used to sell indulgences to sinners. HR 2454 also gives federal bureaucrats new power to regulate a wide variety of household appliances, such as light bulbs and refrigerators, and further distorts the market by providing more of your tax money to auto companies…”

Dr Ron Paul Discusses His Bill To Audit The Fed
Ron Paul: Obama 'Goal' Is Economic Collapse
“An economic collapse seems to be the goal of Congress and this administration,” Paul said during his weekly radio address Monday.
“Washington spends with impunity, domestically bailing and nationalizing basically everything they can get their hands on,” Paul said.
Mocking the idea that Obama was a “peace candidate,” Paul pointed out that hisadministration will be sending another $106 billion it doesn't have "to continue the bloodshed in Afghanistan and Iraq without a hint of a plan to bring American troops home."
Paul noted that many of his congressional colleagues who previously voted with him in opposition to every war supplemental request under the Bush administration seem to have changed their tune. He maintains that a vote to fund the war is a vote in favor of the war.
“Congress exercises its constitutional prerogatives through the power of the purse,” Paul said. “As long as Congress continues to enable these dangerous interventions abroad, there is no end in sight: that is until we face total economic collapse.”
Paul noted that, as Americans struggle through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, the foreign aid and International Monetary Fund appropriations in the spending bill passed last week can be called an international bailout:
The emergency supplemental appropriations bill sends:
$660 million to Gaza
$555 million to Israel
$310 million to Egypt
$300 million to Jordan
$420 million to Mexico
$889 million to the United Nations for so-called “peace-keeping” missions
$1 billion overseas to address the global financial crisis outside U.S. borders
$8 billion to address a potential pandemic flu, which he said could result in mandatory
vaccinations “for no discernable reason other than to enrich the pharmaceutical companies.”
Perhaps most outrageous, Paul said, is the $108 billion loan guarantee to the IMF.
“These new loan guarantees will allow that destructive organization to continue spending taxpayer money to prop up corrupt leaders and promote harmful economic policies overseas. Not only does sending American taxpayer money to the IMF hurt citizens here, evidence shows that it even hurts those it pretends to help.”
Paul said that IMF loans require policy changes called “structural adjustment” programs, which amount to “forced Keynesianism.”
“This is the very fantasy-infused economic model that has brought our own country to its knees,” Paul said, “and IMF loans act as the Trojan horse to inflict it on others."
Leaders in recipient nations tend to become more concerned with the wishes of international needs than the needs of their own people, he said.
“Argentina and Kenya are just two examples of countries that followed IMF mandates right off a cliff. The IMF frequently recommends currency devaluations to poorer nations, which has wiped out the already impoverished over and over.”
Paul noted a long list of brutal dictators the IMF happily supported and propped up with loans that left their oppressed populaces with staggering amounts of debt with no economic progress to show for it.
The continued presence of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan does not make America safer at home but, in fact, undermines national security, he said.
“We are buying nothing but evil and global oppression by sending [our] taxpayer dollars to the IMF — not to mention there is no constitutional authority to do so.”

Ron Paul against the International Bailouts
International Bailout Brings Us Closer to Economic Collapse
Last week Congress passed the war supplemental appropriations bill. In an affront to all those who thought they voted for a peace candidate, the current president will be sending another $106 billion we don’t have to continue the bloodshed in Afghanistan and Iraq, without a hint of a plan to bring our troops home.
Many of my colleagues who voted with me as I opposed every war supplemental request under the previous administration seem to have changed their tune. I maintain that a vote to fund the war is a vote in favor of the war. Congress exercises its constitutional prerogatives through the power of the purse, and as long as Congress continues to enable these dangerous interventions abroad, there is no end in sight, that is until we face total economic collapse.
From their spending habits, an economic collapse seems to be the goal of Congress and this administration. Washington spends with impunity domestically, bailing out and nationalizing everything they can get their hands on, and the foreign aid and IMF funding in this bill can rightly be called an international bailout!

Icarus at Clontarf
“Captain Penfold, who has made many balloon ascents and parachute descents in Sydney had an exciting experience at Clontarf yesterday, when instead of landing on solid earth he dropped into Middle Harbour.
The aeronaut’s ascent was satisfactory, and he hung by his legs from his trapeze, at a height of several thousand feet, calmly snapshotting the city and harbour. He then cut away the parachute, and dropped steadily towards the ground, intending to land near the Spit Point. As he neared the ground however, he saw that he was dropping straight for the waters of Middle Harbour, and he immediately started manipulating his cords in an endeavour to work the parachute over to dry earth. He missed the shore by a few yards, and leaving the parachute, swam to a boat, and was soon on the launch which was waiting to pick him up in case matters should turn out as they did. The balloon also dropped into the water close by, and both this and the parachute were afterwards recovered.”
Captain Penfold also made a number of balloon ascents from Manly Oval in 1911.

War canoes at Clontarf
“The Village, which is peopled by 70 Maoris, including the famous guides, Maggie and Ella Papakura, has been erected with material specially brought from the Lake District of New Zealand and is a faithful representation of a Maori pah. See Maori carvings and curios, and historic war canoes 60 feet long.
There are novel entertainments daily at 3pm and 8.30pm. The village is well lighted by electric light and can be viewed as well by day as by night. The unique character of the performance, the beautiful open-air surroundings, the quaint village in the background, all afford a specially tempting form of entertainment for a summer evening.
Return fare including admission, 1/6, steamers from Fort Macquarie."
The Maori were from the Rotorua area of New Zealand, and their touring show later went on to visit London.

The Shute Shield
The Sydney Morning Herald, Wednesday 7 June 1922 reported: “As a result of injuries received while playing at Manly in the Rugby football match between the team which toured New Zealand and the Next 15, Robert Elliott Shute, a front row forward in the latter team, died at a private hospital at Manly yesterday morning. The accident occurred during the latter portion of the first spell of the match. Shute secured the ball and when tackled fell heavily. He was removed to a private hospital, where it was ascertained that he was suffering from cerebral hemorrhage. Without recovering consciousness he died at 6am. A former pupil of Sydney Grammar School, Shute, who was 23 years of age, was a third year student at Sydney University and he played for the University first fifteen. He served in the AIF for four years."
The University club had the shield made following his death and donated it to the NSWRU to be used as a perpetual trophy for the Sydney first grade competition.

Obama and Union Bosses
President Barack Obama has sent an unmistakable message to the mayors of America’s financially strapped cities: You had better think twice before opposing unreasonable union demands. The U.S. Conference of Mayors held its annual meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, this week to discuss the current economic crisis, but top officials from the Obama Administration were noticeably absent. It seems Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder, and other high ranking Obama aides were set to attend the conference before deciding that they would heed requests by International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) union bosses to boycott. The union bosses are unhappy that the Democrat mayor of Providence has refused to give in to their outrageous union contract demands as the city faces a budget crisis.
Big Labor Moves to Forcibly Unionize America’s First Responders
In a statement, National Right to Work Committee president Mark Mix pointed out that Obama cosponsored the Police & Fire Monopoly Bargaining Bill, a bill that would override state and local laws in 27 states and could result in forcing every police officer and firefighter in the country under union boss control.
"If Big Labor succeeds in passing the Police and Firefighter Monopoly Bargaining Bill, stories like what’s going in Providence are going to be repeated all over the country. It’s going to result in outrageous union boss demands, higher taxes, and more and more cities going bankrupt," said Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Committee.
"If mayors don’t want this to happen to their cities, they better start contacting their U.S. Senators right away. The Obama administration is more than willing to ram it down their throats for the benefit of nobody but Big Labor."
By refusing to come to this meeting of mayors to discuss the economy, ways to gain new jobs and deal with budget shortfalls, the Obama Administration is clearly saying they don’t care. The only people they care about are the union bosses."
That could hardly have been clearer considering their refusal to attend the Conference of Mayors this weekend," added Mix.

Paris Freedom Fest 2009
You’re invited to the Paris Freedom Fest 2009, jointly sponsored by Libertarian International and Liberté Chérie.
The Freedom Fest will be held in Paris, 10–13 September 2009. Expect a memorable event. Crises and crunches have changed the public perception of the freedom movement. Now is the time to reflect, to redefine the issues and to restore confidence. Together with some leading lights of political philosophy, we will be introducing a new generation of activists and intellectual fighters — young, exciting, never-heard-before students and scholars. They explore radical ideas, they don’t shy from controversy, and they will change the conversation about freedom forever.
A conference is also the time when we catch up with foreign friends and make new ones. It is an inspirational moment, when we recharge our moral batteries.
Don’t miss it.
Christian Michel, Convenor of Paris Freedom Fest 2009

A Manly Mansion
In 1932, there was a change of use, and the building became the home of Manly Presbyterian Grammar School for Boys, founded by the Educational Trust of the Presbyterian Church of NSW. An advertisement described how “its commanding position, pleasant play grounds and large, sunny, well-ventilated rooms combine to render the Manly Presbyterian Grammar School ideal for the welfare and education of boys.” The Headmaster was Mr J H Irvine.
The School closed in 1939 with the approach of WWII, but then in 1940, the site was developed as ‘Keera Hall’, a house for “underprivileged and delinquent children”, run by the Social Service department of the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales. An appeal was launched for funds to provide necessary furnishings: “single iron bedsteads, mattresses, bedding, blankets, linen, also for kitchen and dining-room furniture and equipment; also for a few men, who could bring along a few tools and paint-brushes and repair and tidy the place and the grounds.”
The Boys’ Home closed in December 1962, and the site was subsequently redeveloped with a large three-storey block of units.

Congressman Paul's Texas Straight Talk
“Last week, another bill was passed and signed into law that takes more of our freedoms and violates the Constitution of the United States. It was, of course, done for the sake of the children, and in the name of the health of the citizenry. It’s always the case that when your liberty is seized, it is seized for your own good. Such is the condescension of Washington. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act will give sweeping new powers over tobacco to the FDA. It will require everyone engaged in manufacturing, preparing, compounding, or processing tobacco to register with the FDA and be subjected to FDA inspections, which is yet another violation of the Fourth Amendment…”

Congressman Paul's Texas Straight Talk: GM, Amtrak and an Increasingly Fascist America
“Last week, General Motors finally declared bankruptcy. Many in government thought $20 billion in taxpayer dollars would save the company, but as predicted, it only postponed the inevitable. The government will dump another $30 billion into GM and take a 60% controlling interest for it. Public officials are now involving themselves in tactical business decisions such as where GM’s headquarters should move and what kind of cars it will build.
The promise that this is temporary and will eventually be profitable is supposed to ease the American people into accepting this arrangement, but it is of little comfort to those who remember similar promises when the American taxpayers bought Amtrak…”

The band on the ferry
And where the men and maidens in the bounding billows go.
I loved the journey over, it was bonza, it was grand,
As the ferry moved to music from the little German Band.
On the upper deck they gathered, sometimes four, sometimes three
And oh the jazzes that they played, and oh the melodee.
They played the latest numbers heard at the pantomime
And then, the way they played them, Lor’ luv me, it was fine.
Of course you couldn’t hear them from the bottom deck, you know,
Nor underneath the hatches where the courting couples go;
Still, that was but a detail for one would make descent
And offer the collection box no matter where you went!
But now the trip to Manly, with glimpse of rolling sea
With bobbing empty bottles holds never charm with me,
I miss the quaint piano, and the queer asthmatic flute
The double bass and fiddle – why the boat is cold and mute!
I always went to Sydney when contest time came round
For I loved to hear the playing and the waves of rolling sound
And when I wearied sometimes of the masters’ noble notes
I would steal away to Manly and the band upon the boats!
This year I’m doin’ nothin’, the contest won’t see me,
The men that run the show down there and I do not agree -
We sent an ultimatum, and to the Sec. I wrote,
“If you want me at your concert, put the band back on the boat!”

Fight Government Encroachment into Health Care! - Ron Paul - Dprogram.net
With a faltering economy, and skyrocketing costs, healthcare continues to be a critical issue for all Americans. Unfortunately government encroachment into the doctor/patient relationship is poised to exacerbate our problems with healthcare.
Manly Council's surf-boat
“The launching of the Manly surf boat on Saturday afternoon [23 March 1907] was a magnificent success, perhaps one of the greatest successes the Manly Council has to its credit.
This was mainly due to the efforts and activity of Mayor Learmonth, ex-Mayor Quirk and Mr D Hogan (Council Clerk) who were ably assisted by many other willing and energetic workers.
The Mayor of Manly presided and on the specially erected platforms there were also: Mr C G Wade, KC, Attorney-General; Mr C W Oakes, MLA for Paddington; Dr Richard Arthur, MLA for Middle Harbour; ex-Mayor Quirk, Alderman Walker, Alderman King, Mr D Hogan (Council Clerk), Commander M Roberts, Mr A von Tossau, Mr W Tonge, and Captain Webber (Royal Shipwreck Society).
The Manly surf carnival was a new departure in the 'pastime natatorial' and was organised for the purpose of celebrating the launching of the recently built surf boat, which, under the control of Messrs Sly brothers will patrol the water fronting ocean beach during the bathing season.
Between 40,000 and 50,000 people were present.
The Attorney-General referred to the widespread popularity of surf-bathing. It was essential, he said, that bathers should be well catered for and every effort should be made to contend against the possibility of loss of life through drowning.
Mr Wade, with a pair of silver scissors, presented to him by Mayor Learmonth (on behalf of the Council) severed the red silk ribbon and performed the ceremony of launching the surf boat.
During the afternoon ‘Appy Eyre, beach custodian, and Mr A von Tossau, gave a display of life-saving, Eyre entering the water and effecting a rescue after which the usual methods of resuscitation were adopted.
The Seagull Club (Messrs Chambers, Lane, Rosenthal, Wickham and Triglone) contributed a diving display from a pedestal erected in the sea.
The Manly Borough Band played selections during the afternoon.
After the ceremony and whilst the surf carnival was proceeding Mayor Learmonth invited Mr Wade, KC, and a few others to join him in a few toasts at the New Brighton Hotel, where host P J Byrne had placed a tempting and pleasing little spread.”
Identified in the photograph from right to left are: Dr Arthur, ex-Mayor Quirk, and addressing the crowd, Attorney-General Wade.

“With a faltering economy, and skyrocketing costs, healthcare continues to be a critical issue for all Americans. Unfortunately government encroachment into the doctor/patient relationship is poised to exacerbate our problems with healthcare.
As an OB/GYN with over 30 years of experience in private practice, I understand that one of the foundations of quality healthcare is the patient's confidence that all information shared with his or her healthcare provider will remain private. And yet, the Federal Government plans to undermine this trust with establishment of mandatory electronic medical records collections and “unique health identifier” numbers assigned to all Americans. Funding for this program was among the numerous provisions jammed into the stimulus bill rushed through Congress earlier this year…”

Revolution on its way
by Warren "Bones" Bonesteel
In a military.com poll regarding Lt. Easterling's objections over Obama's constitutional eligibility to be president the last number is the one to focus on. For anywho who is in possession of a few basic facts and has an un-biased knowledge of American and world history, the outcome was very revealing. A government that doesn't have a unified standing military to back its power has no dictatorial power over the citizens of the nation it governs. You see, the argument has been made that if Obama is not Constitutionally qualified to be president, that we are no longer living in a constitutional democracy, let alone in a constitutional republic. Thus, the argument leads inevitably to one conclusion: we are effectively being ruled by a dictatorship. The social and political contracts are thus openly broken, null and void, and cannot be readily or peacefully repaired. In such a case, the only powers left to the government are those of force and of coercion. Without a unified standing military and/or a unified and militarized police force, such a government has no effective power over the population. With the first premise in place, the second premise is one of mere historical reality.
In the un-scientific military.com poll, 37% of the respondants are currently 'uncommitted.' Once the violence begins, they will be forced to make decision. Many of them will simply desert their posts and go home, as was the case in both The Revolutionary War and The Civil War. Others will leave their active-duty units, either legally or illegally, and join their home state's national guard units or create of join ad hoc militia units. Before all is said and done, I think that most of that 37% will jump on the Constitutional, anti-government bandwagon. That said, a significant percentage of that same 37% probably consist of the 'don't rock the boat' personalities. Which way any of them jumps will have a bearing on the potential outcomes of any peaceful or violent conflict that will arise as a result of the first two premises.
Also, if (when) another civil war begins in America, expect most of the fifty states to recall their national guard units from any deployment, providing that those units are able to arrange sufficient transportation. Those members of the regular reserves will also have some difficult choices to make.
Keep well in mind that the people who operate military.com lean well to the left of the political center. Like the Marine Corps Times, The Army Times, etc., they are privately owned and operated and their editors, their publishers, and most of their contributors, are comprised of left-leaning journalists. They alone initiated this poll about Lt. Easterling and framed the questions and bear responsibility for the results. Their questions were not based upon the known facts or upon the historical evidence, but the results are interesting, even so...
