Henry Gilbert Smith was already a well-known businessman before he began his development of Manly in the 1860s. One of his earliest money-making projects was the construction in 1831 of the first steam boat in the Colony, which he intended should run between Sydney and Parramatta. Together with his brother Thomas, operating as Smith Brothers, they began an undertaking full of setbacks.
