Commemorative Mural for Mission Australia unveiled in Queensland

Young people supported by Mission Australia unveiled a commemorative mural recently, to mark the organisation’s 150th anniversary in 2009.

The mural is located on the back wall of the Queensland State Office, and has been designed and created by four young people who were involved in an Art Development Project supported by Mission Australia’s Project Circuit Breaker and Jugglers Art Space Inc.

Project Circuit Breaker is a prevention and early intervention service that supports young people aged 9 -17 years from Brisbane's northside, to make changes to their lives and further develop the family’s skills and resilience.  The service is operated by Mission Australia and funded by the Qld Department of Communities.

The four young people involved in creating the mural were mentored by a professional artist, in conjunction with Jugglers Art Space Inc. Throughout the creative process, the young people were provided the opportunity to develop their personal strengths and artistic ability.

Kym Dwyer, Team Leader of Project Circuit Breaker, noted that the mural design represents the ongoing transformation that families and young people undergo throughout the program and their lives.

“The images of butterflies are symbolic of this transition, signifying moving from difficult times into a more hopeful and positive future,” Kim said.

One of the young artists noted that Mission Australia's involvement with their community provided inspiration for their artwork.

“This insight into Mission Australia’s work really gave the mural an extra dimension of fulfilment and satisfaction as we knew we were doing this for a great cause and even greater community of people,”
