Creative Youth Initiatives: Staff discuss art and music programs in new video

Jane and Liz from Mission Australia's Creative Youth Initiatives have recently been interviewed about about how art and music tuition can inspire and build confidence with young clients.

Established in 1993, Sydney's Creative Youth Initiatives (CYI), is a unique service that provides free creative programs for young people aged 16 - 25 who are facing many and varied challenges in their lives, such as homelessness, mental health issues or family breakdown.



The programs develop their creativity through visual arts and music as well their self expression, esteem, communication skills and provide positive learning experiences and educational qualifications.

George Street houses

Our appeal for information about George Street, Manly, has turned up this 1926 image of 'Ohio', built circa 1905, demolished in the late 1950s. 'Ohio' was the home of the Custer family. David Walter Custer was born in Ohio, USA, in 1865 and came to Australia in 1890. He founded the firm of D W Custer & Co Ltd, importers of fine Italian marble. Marble imported by the company was used in the construction of the magnificent State Theatre. Mr Custer was well-known in Manly Masonic circles. he was Worshipful Master of Lodge St John, and held office in several other lodges. He was a president of the Manly Bowling Club, and a vice-president of Manly Life-Saving Club. According to family recollections, the front room nearest the camera was dominated by a billiard table. The house would have had uninterrupted views out towards Sydney Harbour Heads.

A pre-flight flavour of Charcoal Lane

Travellers heading south from Sydney Airport can now feast their eyes on a striking new Charcoal Lane booth promoting the Melbourne restaurant.

The booth, which was supplied to Mission Australia by ACP Magazines as part of an ongoing promotional program, is positioned in the Qantas Club Lounge in the domestic terminal. 

The booth invites passengers to Melbourne to treat themselves “to a meal at Charcoal Lane and help make a difference”.

Charcoal Lane is a Mission Australia-operated social enterprise restaurant that offers modern Australian cuisine with an Aboriginal flavour.

The social enterprise enables Aboriginal and disadvantaged young people to gain experience in a supported work environment as part of a program that integrates personal skills development and accredited education in hospitality.

The promotional booth, which was launched last Wednesday, features images of the Charcoal Lane team as well as the menu to whet travellers’ appetites.

You can find Charcoal Lane at 136 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 10.30pm.
